2020 Sounds of Australia

True Blue, Whitlam's campaign song and Silverchair officially inducted as sounds that made Australia | The '70s masterpiece Because I Love You by The Master's Apprentices is one of the official Sounds of Australia, inducted into the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia registry in 2020. Each year, the registry collects 10 recordings that have had a defining impact on Australian culture.

Canberra signs and icons

Sign of the Times: take a trip through the memories of a changing Canberra | Sign of the Times has opened at the Canberra Museum and Gallery. On display are the signs that can be seen as snapshots of Canberra’s history and allow the viewer to dive into the larger story of how Canberra has changed over the decades. The exhibition is free and open until February 20, 2021.

Winning history, winning cartoons

Dr Stephen Gapps wins inaugural Les Carlyon Literary Prize | Dr Stephen Gapps has won the inaugural Les Carlyon Literary Prize for his work, The Sydney Wars – Conflict in the early colony 1788-1817. The history is an examination of conflict in the first years of the British settlement of New South Wales through the lens of military history.

Behind the Lines: The year in political cartoons 2020 opens at MoAD | The latest Behind the Lines: The year in political cartoons opened at the Museum of Australian Democracy Old Parliament House on 20 November, with the theme 2020 A dog’s breakfast!  Cathy Wilcox, cartoonist for the Sydney Morning Herald and the Age, received the 2020 Political Cartoonist of the Year award at the exhibition’s launch. Open daily 9am to 5pm for 12 months until 20 November 2021.
